Upcoming Sydney Practice Days

Beginning Zen Course @ Buddhist Library
Jul 1 – Jul 2 all-day

Beginning Zen is our introductory one and a half day workshop that we offer twice a year.

This course is a rare and precious opportunity to step into the beginnings of zen practice with Roshi Susan Murphy. Ideal for those who are new to zen practice, and those who would like to begin again! Of course, you are also welcome to come and sit with the Zen Open Circle for the first time at any of our other events. This course provides a chance to study in a small group setting with time for discussion, questions, and interaction with the teacher.

When: July 1st / 1-5pm + July 2nd / 10am-4pm
Where: Buddhist Library Camperdown, Sydney
Cost: $50/$35 Concession + Dana (a donation to the teacher for the teachings).
Registration: Click here to register your place in this course.

About the program:

‘In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities; in the expert’s there are few.’ – Shunryu Suzuki

Zen prizes ‘beginners’ mind’ – an open responsive awareness freed of habitual preferences and preconceptions.  To a non-judgmental mind the moment arrives fresh, nothing repeats, and there’s nothing to attain, for everything’s completely here.  But of course such open and immediate responsiveness is an attainment, a generous, open quality to the mind and what arises that’s endlessly discovered and honed in Zen practice.

Beginning Zen gives you a valuable road-map for Zen practice.  It includes:

  • a brief history of Zen Buddhism;
  • detailed introduction to the practice of zazen (seated meditation) and kinhin (walking meditation);
  • examination of the simple ritual form that exists to support practice;
  • exploration of shikantaza (‘just sitting’), koan practice, and the teacher-student relationship;
  • investigation of the vows and precepts that give ethical and spiritual strength to Zen practice;
  • and the opportunity next day to put what you’ve learned into practice in a Zazenkai (a full day of zazen and dharma inquiry)

Cost:  $50/$35 concession – to cover cost of hall hire and your copy of ‘Beginning Zen’ handbook (25pp).  Plus an offering of dana (donation, generosity)* for the teaching.

*In accordance with Buddhist tradition the teaching is offered to you as a gift (dana), opening the way for you to explore the heart-opening practice of generosity (dana) in return.

Moon in the Water, Luminous Reality in Mind

Cold lake, for thousands of yards, soaks up sky colour.
Evening quiet: a fish of brocade scales reaches bottom, then goes
first this way, then that way; arrow notch splits.
Endless water surface moonlight brilliant.

– Dogen, trans. Kaz Tanahashi

We invite you to join us for this day of Zen practice in Sydney. All are welcome and no prior experience is required.

At our recent practice weekend at Cloud Mountain (our Zendo south of Sydney) we made a special study of Dogen Kigen (1200-1253) and his marvellous Genjo Koan. This sparked a strong interest in this magisterial 13th century Zen master and the subtle and rewarding practice of Just Sitting (Shikantaza) for which he is very well known.

For this Zazenkai (day of Zen practice) we will focus on further exploring the rich mind of Dogen and the simple engrossing practice of Shikantaza. This connects with the is the so-called ‘other’ stream of our lineage/tradition which seamlessly draws together koan meditation (Rinzai/Linji Zen) with the ‘silent illumination’ of ‘just sitting’ (Soto/Caodong Zen).

Program:

10.00 — Gather and set-up
10.30 — Detailed guided meditation on Shikantaza, with q&a to follow
11.15-1pm — Zazen and opportunity to attend dokusan (private interview with the teacher).
1pm-1.45 — Lunch (please bring a plate to share)
1.45 — Sutras/Chanting, Zazen, final dokusan opportunity
2.30 — Dharma talk:  The Vast Mind of Dogen
3.15 — Zazen, Great Vows
3.30 — Pack up, clean up
4pm — Home

The flow of the day:
Doors open at 10am when we set up the space and offer basic guidance to any newcomers. Please arrive in time for a 10.30 start of the day of practice.
If you come late, kindly wait quietly outside the sitting space until the next round of walking meditation is signled, and then move quickly to stand in front of any vacant seat.

Also offered through the morning are face to face interviews about practice (dokusan) with the teacher for existing committed members.

However if you are just beginning practice with us, you’re entitled to come to dokusan 2-3 times as a way to decide more formally committing to a student-teacher relationship, and membership.

What to bring:
Your heart-body-mind and a deep sense of curiosity!

This full day of practice is offered to all in the traditional Buddhist spirit of Dana (Sanskrit). Dana is the practice of willing generosity on which all life, as well as the gift of the teaching, must depend. Your donation placed in the Dana Bowl at the top of the stairs sustains our teacher and completes the circle of the gift.

So bring just yourself (minus your expectations), some food to share for lunch, and dana for the teaching.

A stimulating evening ‘In Conversation’ with Two Zen Roshis (Senior Teachers)

Dr David Loy and Dr Susan Murphy, both formally acknowledged Zen Roshis who are close ‘cousins’ in Dharma lineage terms, will be launching together their two most recent books:  Loy’s A New Buddhist Path (Wisdom Publications, Boston);  and Murphy’s Red Thread Zen: humanly entailed in emptiness (Counterpoint, Berkeley).  Several of their other books will be available for signing also on the night.

Expect a lively and spirited conversation about the way each of these two teachers regard the vital need for active social engagement in any spiritual practice, in our exceptional time of planetary crisis.

‘Why Zen and a world in crisis need each other’ – with Professor David Loy

The mercy of the West has been social revolution. The mercy of the East has been individual insight into the basic self/void. We need both.
– Gary Snyder

The highest ideal of the Western tradition has been to restructure our societies so that they are more socially just. The most important goal for Buddhism is to awaken and put an end to dukkha “suffering” due to the delusion of a separate self. Today it has become obvious that we need both: not just because individual transformation and social transformation complement each other, but because each project needs the other

In the particular context of a world facing social and ecological crisis, David Loy will explore the intersections and possibilities that emerge when Zen/Buddhism and modernity meet and become entangled.

Our global and human predicament calls for new perspectives that question many of the priorities and presuppositions of modernity and buddhism. Can we employ each viewpoint to interrogate the other without accepting either perspective as absolute? How can we maintain a dual practice of continuing the path of personal transformation while doing everything we can to promote social and ecological transformation? Is there a new path that can be forged on the knife-edge between the two at this critical moment in history?

Friday Night Deep Dive @ Sydney Zen Centre
Jul 21 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Come and dive deep into silence and community with the Zen Open Circle.

On three Friday’s per month we gather at the Sydney Zen Centre to practice sitting meditation (zazen), walking meditation (kinhin), and to enjoy being in the company of others who are walking the Way of Zen (our sangha!). Afterwards there is also the possibility of continuing the nourishment with a shared meal nearby. All are welcome!

This practice will provide you with the opportunity to settle deep into shared silence in the beautiful space of the Sydney Zen Centre.

Previous experience in this tradition is not required. We can provide an orientation for anyone who is new or returning to practice. Please email gassho@zenopencircle.org.au if you would like an orientation or have any questions.

For those who are interested in our Beginning Zen Course (https://www.facebook.com/events/1231511473611824/), these Friday events could be a great opportunity to experience zen practice before the ‘theory’ of the course is introduced. A chance to simply sit and be.

This is a free event. Dana (a donation) is welcome if you would like to contribute towards the costs for the event.
